Key Characteristics

History

Founded in Weimar in 1919 by Walter Gropius, it was intended as a single school bringing together all forms of art into a unified style, eventually, in order to cope with financial upkeep, it became more commercial focused, emphasising the importance of consumer focused design. It was then moved to Dessau in 1925, into a building designed by Walter Gropius, where it remained until 1930, where it moved to Berlin due to financial issues and political instability. Finally it was shut down by the Nazi party in 1933.

Laszlo Moholy Nagy

Born in Hungary and studied law, after the First World War, he switched to studying art under the Hungarian artist Robert Bereny. After the fall of communism in Hungary, he moved to Berlin, where he met Walter Gropius at an exhibition. Later, in 1923, he was invited by Gropius to take over Johannes Itten’s role as foundation course teacher, and also to become head of the metal workshop. He worked on a varied range of art, including photography, film, painting and sculpture.
