In the modern world, children have the opportunity to engage with various cultures of the world. Often, this only delves into the surface level of food, tv shows, music, etc. but people still lack a feeling of empathy for others around the world despite having the opportunity to experience some of their culture. There is a need for a solution that from an early age, allows children to explore and experience what life is like for their peers across the world.

After discussion with teachers and students I decided to focus on the subject of music, as it is a diverse topic that can benefit from cultural exchange in teaching, due to the immense variation of music styles across the globe.
To this end, I researched the Playing For Change Foundation and the problem areas they have identified.
The most relevant of these for my project were cultural preservation, which I aim to achieve through exposure of cultural practices in music to other parts of the world; and access to creative opportunities for disadvantaged children. The product will aim to provide these opportunities in the classroom for children in various parts of the world.
I was inspired by Microsoft’s Future Vision video.

This caused me to consider various hypothetical platforms for the product. The one which I found most interesting was the glass screen, as it could be set up as a permanent classroom installation, allowing users to see the other user from another part of the world on the other side, and work together on the same content as if they were in the same room, allowing for a more personal connection. As a classroom installation, it could also be used for other subjects, with my music focused product as an app for the device.
