I enjoyed the thought exercise in this lecture about whether designers can be considered as storytellers, and spent the lecture forming my opinion on it. UX design certainly does follow the structure of Freytag’s pyramid due to our guiding the user through a process of heightening and falling action, but whether that is enough to qualify us as storytellers is up to each person’s personal interpretation. In my opinion, we fill many roles, including the role of a storyteller, and it is undoubtedly important to consider the story of a person who may be using the product. Despite this, I am unsure if I would say that designers are primarily storytellers as a writer for example would be, due to the vast areas a designer works with throughout a project, compared with someone who creates complex stories as a role in itself.
In addition, this lecture has highlighted to me the importance of considering the journey we want to lead our “protagonists” on in every project we make, and making it as easy for them as possible, providing them with the tools they need to complete their goal.
