I found this week’s lecture on studio etiquette useful as I begin to consider the type of workplace I want to work with for my placement year. Naturally, the expected etiquette of a studio is linked to the type of people working there and the general personality of the company and brand. The part of the lecture which I found most useful was the section on meetings, as I find meetings to be quite uncomfortable due to the uncertainty of the personality of the people being met with and their expectations. Some of the advice shared in the lecture will help me to better navigate future business meetings, and more importantly as of now, placement interviews. For example, I find it quite difficult to make small talk with people I do not know, therefore preparing anecdotes will be of great use to me.
I also began working on my portfolio this week. I tried various methods of creating the portfolio, such as Framer, Webflow, UXFolio and Notion. I found Webflow to be somewhat difficult to navigate, and serves a similar purpose to Framer, so I was able to quickly remove it from the shortlist. I also found Notion and UXFolio to be quite similar in their functionality, but UXFolio has features which are more suited to portfolio building and UX work, such as automatically putting images into a device frame. This led me to shortlist UXFolio and Framer, after experimenting with both, ultimately I chose to create the portfolio with UXFolio, due to its higher ease of use and ability to create an equally high quality product in a shorter amount of time.
