I began considering the brand for my product. Some of the brand names I came up with were:
Of these brand names, the one which I am most drawn to is Student Brood. As well as the term “brood” symbolising a close knit group, the symbolism of birds is not only recognisable, but the shape of the head, when simplified to logo form may also be used to evoke the image of a chat bubble, emphasising the social nature of the product.
I then created some sketches of possible logos based on these naming ideas.
For the brand name “UniLink” I used literal symbolism of chain links, as well as two hands holding either end of a chain, symbolising connection through the product. For the name “Peer Port” I used imagery of boats and piers to play with the similarity with the word peer, as well as imagery of a literal port, and a boat symbolising new destinations.
I then compiled my best ideas from my sketches into these logo and wordmarks, incorporating the double meaning of the bird’s head and chat bubble, as well as symbolism of the bird emerging from its shell, alluding to the social purpose of the app.
I also created versions using various colour palettes, but I believe the one shown in the previous image best fits the brand, as it has a slight hint of formality, but the vibrant red contrasts this with a tone of playfulness while the neutral background is easy on the eyes and will work well as a background for on screen content within the interface.
