Intellectual Property

Something I learnt from the lecture this week which I did not already know were the differences between each type of trademark symbol. Previously I was unaware that each mark served a different purpose. The most interesting to me were patented technologies, and how comanies like Samsung and Apple get around each other’s patents by slightly changing each other’s idea enough to pass it as original. I read an article by Ars Technica about Apple and Samsung’s legal dispute over Samsung’s development on smartphones coinciding with the release of the iPhone. The articvle showed how Samsung’s devices changed their sizes and shapes to better match Apple’s, as well as the UI of Samsung smartphones copying the grid structure from Apple (something which several other companies also did, according to the article). Evidence shows Samsung was already in development of screened phone devices since before the iPhone, but I believe it is too coincidental for Apple’s success not to have had influence on their drastic change.

Tender Document Pricing

I began by considering how much I would charge per hour of working on the project. My research showed that a senior designer would be paid a median of £24.36 per hour up to a higher end of £34.62. Therefore I decided that as someone who would be designing for such an ambitious and important community project, I would probably have enough experience to warrant charging around £30 per hour.

I split up the work into the following time allocations:

Rebrand of the Titanic Quarter -

8 hours research

4 hours ideation

12 hours design

6 hours ideation

30 hours total

Titanic Quarter Tourist Website -

4 hours research

4 hours ideation

6 hours design

4 hours prototyping
